Democrats propose new, tougher gun laws (Sarah Gamard)
“Delaware Democrats are taking another crack at toughening the state’s gun laws, and this time “they think they have the votes.” Three bills have been introduced: (1) ban certain firearms (“assault weapons” ban on AR-15s, etc.); (2) ban the use or possession of certain magazines (over 15 rounds), and (3) require a permit to buy a gun (to include mandatory training equivalent to the present requirements for concealed carry permits). A rally outside Legislative Hall was held yesterday, under the aegis of AG Kathy Jennings & House Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst.
Hosted by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the rally was joined by “hundreds of gun rights advocates.” [John Nichols, not mentioned in the story, was one of them.] Among other things, they jeered that “we will not comply” and “stop treating us like criminals.” Jeff Hague, president of the local NRA affiliate (Delaware State Sportsmen’s Association) is quoted to the effect that the proposed laws are discriminatory and would only affect law-abiding citizens.
One of the new faces in the legislative scrum this year is Sen. Trey Paradee (D-Dover), vice Sen Brian Bushweiller, who voted against the assault weapons ban last year. Paradee didn’t comment on the gun bills per se, but he slammed the actions of the “so-called gun rights advocates” as “abhorrent and juvenile and contrary to the principles of reasonable and civil discourse.”
