Carney signs $4.3B budget, awards bonuses (Brandon Holveck)

On the second-to-last day of legislative sessions, the governor is pictured signing the $4.27 billion operating bill with a number of people looking on. He also signed a $49 million supplement to the budget that contained, among other things, a bonus package: state workers will receive a one-time bonus of $500 and retired state employees will receive a $400 bonus in their pension checks. In both cases, the “extra cash” is expected to be paid out in the fall.” This will be “one of the first income increases approved for the state’s 27,000 pension recipients since 2015, when the General Assembly awarded them a 1 percent cost-of-living increase.” Given the underfunding of the state pension fund, such adjustments seem fiscally irresponsible.
