Secure America's Future Economy (SAFE) Advocating smaller, more focused, less costly government since 1996
February 26, 2018
The Honorable Paul Ryan 1233 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515
Dear Representative Ryan:
The government's fiscal problem is basically a function of spending more on government programs than Americans are willing to pay in taxes. We have written to you and other members of Congress about this subject over the years, and you sent us a pleasing response in 2011. A classy letter, SAFE newsletter, Fall 2011.
The fiscal problem remains unsolved, however, and it currently seems to be getting worse. Given the trillion-dollar deficits in prospect, we would be inclined to label the recent budget deal as a breakdown (versus a "breakthrough" as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called it). More shutdown drama, mediocre results, 2/12/18.
SAFE is only modestly encouraged by the authorization of a joint select committee to review and recommend upgrades to the budget process, an effort that you reportedly supported. One of two things seems likely under the prescribed ground rules for this exercise - tinkering with the procedures that won't make a particle of difference or deadlock. More shutdown drama, mediocre results, Section C, 2/12/18.
We have developed and would like to offer some suggestions that might improve the odds for a fruitful JSC review. Let's make the budget process work, 2/19/18.
Please advise if you have questions or we can help further.
