Secure America's Future Economy (SAFE) Advocating smaller, more focused, less costly government since 1996
February 26, 2018
The Honorable Charles Schumer 322 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Schumer:
The Senate Majority leader and you highlighted perceived positives in your February 7 statements about the budget deal, e.g., the boost to defense spending (which we support). The effects of the deal on the cancerous growth of spending, deficits and debt weren't mentioned. With all due respect, this was not a "big win for the American people." More shutdown drama, mediocre results, 2/12/18.
As you may know, the fiscal outlook has deteriorated since the president's budget proposal for FY 2018, e.g., the projection of gross debt at the end of FY 2027 has increased from $24.7T to $29.6T. ($1T of this increase could be blamed on the tax cut, but what about the rest?) Let's make the budget process work, Section I (president's budget proposal for FY 2019), 2/19/18.
Do the members of Congress believe trillion-dollar deficits and soaring debt are acceptable, and if not what will be done about them? OK, there will be a joint select committee review of the budget process, but it's hard to imagine this exercise will accomplish much. Bipartisan, bicameral majority required to get anything done - and if the JSC identifies abuse of the Senate filibuster rule as the key problem, its legislative recommendations could be blocked by a filibuster. Talk about a "catch 22" situation!
Ever hopeful, SAFE has developed and would like to offer some suggestions that might improve the odds for a fruitful JSC review. Let's make the budget process work, Section V, 2/19/18.
Please advise if you have questions or we can help further.
